Century even powers tugs!

Ever wondered what powers a tug boat? These boats tug and guide ships that carry about 250,000 deadweight tonnage as they load and unload materials like iron ore into ports. Amazingly, their critical systems can be powered by a Century battery, adapted to suit the difficult conditions of a tug’s tiny battery room compartment. When Pilbara Iron Marine Operations, part of the Rio Tinto Group in Western Australia, needed to replace batteries that supply backup power for the DC generator for their tug boats, they asked Century to find a way to deliver 24 volts without risking an explosion! The main problem was that the battery rooms are only a few cubic metres, which made it difficult to manoeuvre heavy batteries into place and downright dangerous to solder smaller batteries together in situ. Century decided to supply three forklift battery trays with 4x2 volt cells that would be linked together to create a 24 volt battery. And to get around the danger of soldering on site that could set off an explosion, they modified the battery cell posts so they would be bolted on instead. Century’s Randall Atkinson, who managed the project, said, “We supplied all the components loose with a detailed assembly drawing so that everything could be crane lifted into the battery room, put into place and assembled safely”. “We also made sure the cells were bolted in the middle of the trays with sufficient space on the sides to allow for cooling and circulation of air to minimise heat,” he said. Pilbara Iron’s Julian Carr-White is pleased the battery setup was quick and safe. “These batteries are used to power critical systems on our tugboats like the PLC / Engine management systems, tank gauges, navigation systems, all the 24 volt radios and 24 volt emergency systems in case our generator fails – so you can see why they’re so important,” he said. You probably already know that Century is Australia’s oldest and leading battery manufacturer, renowned for superior automotive, marine, heavy equipment, deep cycle and forklift batteries. Who knows where their batteries will end up next? For more information on what Century can do for you call 1300 362 287 or visit www.centurybatteries.com.au.
